Species that use electrical communication




The species mainly associated with electrical communication belong to the families Gymnotidae, Hypopomidae, Mormyridae, Gymrarchidae, Sternopygidae, and a few members of the families Malaptururidae, Rajidae, Uranoscopidae, and Torpedinidae.  These fish are mostly freshwater fish from South America and Africa
 
 
The primary groups that use electrical communication are the gymnotids from South America and the mormyrids from Africa
