Minimizing Stress

It is really important to know how stress affects physiology, but even more important is understanding how to overcome these maladaptive features of stress.  Everyone copes with stress in their own unique way and no method of coping works for everyone.  One of the most common features of a good stress handler is their belief that they can influence the outcome of the situation.  This is called self-efficacy.  A second attribute of a good stress handler is the ability to choose an appropriate coping strategy.  Exercise, listening to enjoyable music, engaging in other relaxing activities, and finding a friend to talk to about your stress are all constructive ways to cope with stress (Woolfolk & Lehrer 1984).  There are a lot of different clinical treatments that have been shown to be effective in reducing stress.  Yogic therapy, meditation, hypnosis, biofeedback, cognitive approaches, pharmological methods and many other strategies have been shown to be effective in reducing stress (Woolfolk & Lehrer 1984).  The best advice that I can give for optimal stress relief is to figure out what works for you!  This summer, I found a great hobbie that works better than anything else I have found- Surfing.
