Question: Which of the following is true for marine organisms?

Answer:

Salt is easily lost from marine organisms, but can be quickly regained.
Salt does not have a tendency to diffuse from marine organisms, but water does.
Marine organisms in the open ocean have a wide tolerance range for salinity.
Marine organisms do not easily lose salt or water, since the concentrations of those substances are similar inside and outside of the body.

Question: Coral reefs may be especially susceptible to which of the following environmental stresses, and why?

Answer:

Rapid climate change, because they are slow growers.
Tourism and boating, because they break easily and are slow growers.
Eutrophication, because their symbiotic algae may not get enough light.
All of the above may adversely affect corals.

Question: Explain how cultural eutrophication may lead to fish kills, and why this is more likely to happen in the summer than winter.

Answer:

CE causes nutrient enrichment, which causes algal blooms. Algae die, sink to the bottom, and are degraded by aerobic (oxygen-consuming) bacteria. The bacteria use up all the oxygen, and deprive fish of oxygen. This is more likely in summer due to thermal stratification, and less oxygen can dissolve in warmer waters.

Question: Explain one environmental stress that affects streams. Also explain how streams may be more or less susceptible to that particular stress or pollution than lakes.

Answer:

Channelization, runoff, sedimentation, urban development. Whether they are more or less susceptible depends on which is chosen, but need to compare turnover rates, flow, volume, or other factors.

Question: Biomagnification occurs when

Answer:

humans dump pollutants into streams, which then wash down and build up in estuaries.
slowly degrading, fat-soluble pollutants increase in concentration in animals up the food chain.
slowly degrading, fat-soluble pollutants increase in concentration in animals above environmental levels.
humans dump pollutants into lakes and the concentrations builds up in the lake above levels found in other water bodies.
