- Davidson IB Middle School (ongoing relationship):
Tutor for Science Olympiad aquatic science and water quality team (2001-2003),
collaborator with Mr. Ralph Pillsbury on a unit on mosquito biology and studies
on mosquitoes in artificial treeholes, consultant on grant “STEPS: Steps Toward
Empowering Potential Scientists,” guest lecturer on various topics, including
stream insect sampling, water quality, and treehole communities.
- Insect Outreach: Routine identifications
and consultations on insects and spiders for citizens. I have identified
insects for local children, faculty, staff, students, Davidson residents,
and the Collections Staff at Discovery Place. I consult for 20-40 people
or groups each year, and have become a “mentor” for several young insect enthusiasts.
- Charlotte Community Drummers: Drummer
for West African Drum group and participant in performances at benefits for
several non-profit organizations, including, but not limited to, RAIN (Regional
AIDS/HIV Interfaith Network), Festival in the Park, United Methodist Church
of Dilworth, and Unitarian Univeralist Church of Charlotte.
