Possible Medicinal Uses
In an in vitro study conducted on human fetal extra corporeal (umbilical cord) blood vessels, B. marinus venom was reported to cause vasodilatation of the blood vessel walls (Lim, 1997).  While not much research has been done to examine possible medicinal uses for cane toad venom, this study is rather interesting.  If the cane toad venom causes vasodilatation, then it could possibly be used in the future as therapy for hypertension, or even as migraine therapy.  The investigations being conducted on cane toad venom are very preliminary and not many areas have been examined, but hopefully one day the venom of these pesky creatures that have caused so much harm to Australia and South Florida may yield a therapy for a human ailment.
