Illegal Uses
Many people believe that the venom produced by the cane toad has psychotropic capabilities when ingested as it contains psilocybin, the active ingredient in illegal mushrooms (Jordan, 1997). In fact, toad venom is a fairly popular way to "get high" in the counter culture of many countries today.
The toad venom may administered orally, by licking or chewing the chopped up skin of a toad, or it may be smoked.  Smoking cane toad venom involves placing about 20 mg of dried cane toad venom on a carrier such as tobacco and forming a cigarette of sorts (Jordan, 1997).  The experts suggest taking only a single inhalation as "smoking the venom is terrifying (Jordan, 1997)."
The high supposedly obtained from cane toad venom is supposed to be quite intense, "much more so than mushrooms or LSD (Jordan, 1997)."  One gentleman described the high as "something like being strapped to the bottom of a jet taking off from an aircraft carrier (Jordan, 1997)."  I'll take his word for it.
There has still yet to be hard scientific evidence as to why cane toad venom causes psychotropic reactions in the body.  But the venom is extremely dangerous, so no matter how "good" the high or how close to God you can get from it, it still seems a little risky.
