Since the introduction of genetically modified organisms into mainstream industry, the European Union has successfully defied U.S. and big business pressure to implement pro-GMO policy. Around the world, the EU is seen as the defender of organic agriculture in the West. The EU's first definitive policy on GMO's arose in response to Bt Corn. It was this crop which has represented the pros and cons of genetically modified agriculture and has remained at the center of the GMO debate. It has also the cornerstone of EU GMO policy, and the basis in which other genetically modified crops have been compared (Hanrahan, 2004).

This website analyzes EU policy on Bt corn, including recently changing dissention among member countries as well as the upcoming battle between the US and EU in the World Trade Organization. The result of this case could redefine EU policy all together.
