RTS takes action

permission pending from www.tao.ca/ ~ban/1299nighttimegardener.htm

RTS does what is known as “nighttime gardening.” This practice has been used by activist groups throughout Europe and has been transplanted over to North America . RTS has been an educator to other activist groups on how to destroy crops efficiently. Nighttime gardeners go out to research sites at night and destroy as many genetically modified crops as possible. The manner used to destroy the crops varies, but the results are the same (www.tao.ca/~ban/1299nighttimegardener.htm , 2000 ).

Nighttime gardeners are very clever. These gardeners do a complete assessment of research facilities in regards to security and what their crops look like. RTS members attend conferences about how to stop “nighttime gardening” so that they can know the security measures of a facility and how to bypass them (http://www.tao.ca/~ban/500ARrts.htm , 2000 ).

When on a gardening venture the proper attire is dark clothing. Gardeners usually wear waterproof gear, because they do not want to be out on a cold night and be wet. Nighttime gardeners wear medical masks and chemical-protective gloves due to the herbicides that many genetically modified crops have been sprayed with. All clothing is disposed of after each gardening visit so that there is no forensic evidence (www.tao.ca/~ban/1299nighttimegardener.htm , 2000).

Tools for nighttime gardening vary depending on the person and types of crops. Some crops can be pulled out the ground or pushed over; others require a sharp tool of some sort. Bolt cutters are an essential tool for nighttime gardeners. Machetes, saws, scythes, hoes, and shears are popular choices. However, nighttime gardeners only take what is needed. Less tools is better because there are less items that can be dropped; it is easier to climb fences; and if you get caught you have less incriminating evidence with you (www.tao.ca/~ban/1299nighttimegardener.htm , 2000).

The philosophy behind nighttime gardening is one of freedom, thus anti-biotechnology activists call genetically modified crops “biotech slaves”. The plants are being freed from the experimentation that biotechnology research facilities are imposing upon the plants (www.tao.ca/~ban/1299nighttimegardener.htm , 2000).
