Who is Reclaim the Seeds?

Reclaim the Seeds (RTS) is a “direct actionist” group that is against biotechnology, more specifically genetically modified plants. This organization works in California mostly, where it attacks university campuses to destroy the genetically modified crops being manufactured. RTS is one of the most prolific anti-genetically modified crops groups in North America . Reclaim the Seeds was the first organization of its kind in North America to make a video tape of destroying genetically modified crops (GMC) available to the public (http://www.tao.ca/~ban/800ARrtsdavis.htm , 2000).

Currently there are at least five attacks on the University of California at Davis that is attributed to RTS. In these attacks the members of RTS do what is known as “nighttime gardening.” Nighttime gardening consists of destroying GMC's (http://www.tao.ca/~ban/800ARrtsdavis.htm , 2000).

RTS does not deny their actions but rather they overtly claim responsibility and ensure that they will not stop. The members of this group assert that they are not scared to risk freedom for the sake of the environment. In fact one member was quoted as saying, “Ultimately, our fear of a dead planet is greater than our fear of state/corporate repression” (http://www.tao.ca/~ban/500ARrts.htm , 2000).

The members of this group feel as though they are the guardians of the environment. They are proud of their actions, which is evident by the communiqué that follows each attack on the University of California at Davis . RTS believes that genetically modified organisms should be a widely debated topic. RTS is angered by the biotechnology companies and research centers that try to keep their research private (http://www.tao.ca/~ban/800ARrtsdavis.htm , 2000).
