Explanation and Guidelines for the methods page assignment

This assignment has four main goals. Through it completion you should:

Become familiar with library and on-line resources
Gain experience writing a short scientific review
Learn the basics of constructing a 'useful' website
Provide a reference for our discussions

The website you create must follow the guidelines listed below:

Site Content guidelines

The site must contain text which explains what the method is, a basic outline of how it is performed and what it can show. Specifically discuss how it relates to the creation of or study of genetically modified organisms
The site must contain one illustration. It can be in any form from a self-drawn 'flow-chart' of the method's protocol to a figure from another website. IF you use a published illustration be sure to a) have permission or permission pending b) give credit
The site must contain one working link to another web location (outside of Davidson College) that can provide more information on the topic
The site must contain a bibliography of all references used. Follow the format listed in the journal Cell for text references and from 'Online' for online references.URLs are http://www.cell.com/misc/authors.shtml and http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/online/cite5.html#1
The site must contain the copyright and comment tag-line seen at the bottom of this page--modified so that it contains YOUR email address
The site must contain a prominent statement of the fact that it was created as an assignment for an undergraduate course at Davidson College.

Site Presentation guidelines

Keep it looking professional
Use text and background that contrast (otherwise it hurts to read)
Only include animation if it is part of the presentation. Dancing 'back' buttons or envolopes that 'send' themselves across the screen are cute but do not add any real content.
Site Posting
It must be saved to the bio server in the correct folder and with the correct name. The bio server is at www.bio.davidson.edu and you have access to a folder on this server. I will tell you the password in class. The Methods Assignment must be saved within the 'methods' folder. The page should be named yourfirstandlastinitial.htm (for example my page would be saved as kb.htm)
You may want to use logos found in the logo folder. This folder contains the Davidson logo, department logo, class logo. By placing them all here we will keep the server more organized and have fewer duplicate files. If there are other logos that you think will be of general interest please let me know and I will add them.
DO NOT remove any images from the image folder. DO NOT add any images to the image folder.
Think about how you organize your site. It may be best to have the homepage and a folder that contains all of your other files. This will help to keep the server organized and will eliminate problem associated with people using the same name for their files.
