Posting pages on the server
MAKE SURE ALL PAGES ARE SAVED AS '.HTML' OR'.HTM' AND ALL IMAGES AS '.GIF' OR '.JPG'

Saving information on your computer is not enough. If you do not put the files--all of them--even the files of inserted pictures-- on the server the site will not work correctly.
Be sure that you also save copies of images onto the server. If may look like you put it on your page but the computer is actually always referring to that image file. If it can't find the image file you will have a big blank spot on your page.

Using MX Dreamweaver to save pages on the server: Mac or PC

THIS IS THE VERSION OF DREAMWEAVER IN WAT247

1. Open Dreamweaver.

2. On right side click on 'define new site' or on top menu under site choose 'define new'

3. Decide on a site name. The site name does not matter and is just to help you know where you are on the computer. You can save more than one project into a site (its not the same as a 'folder' its more like a shortcut). Click on Next

4. Part 2: make sure that 'no' is chosen. Click on Next

5. Leave on recommended choice (edit locally on my machine then upload files to server)
Use the folder by the bottom box to choose where your files are or should be saved locally (on Z drive (Louise), on D drive (ZIP).[If you are a Mac user and your files are on Louise make sure you have established a connection to Louise before starting to define the site. Not all computers are set up to have automatic connections to Louise] Click on Next

6. Use the pulldown menu to choose 'FTP' as method for connecting to remote server. Fill in boxes with following information

FTP host bio.davidson.edu
folder web/people/kabernd/seminar/2004
Login the classes' username
Password the classes' password

Use the test button to make sure it works. If it does not the first thing to check is your spelling. Click on Next

7. Make sure that 'no' check in/out is selected. Click on Done.

You will need to do this every time you change computers in Dana 220.If you log into the same computer it should save your site information between log ins.

8. To move the files onto the server look at the site 'tab' on the right part of your screen. Click on the two plugs so that they connect. The first pull down menu should have your site name on it. The second pulldown menu is a way to switch between your local site (your working files on Louise/Zip) and your remote site on the bio server and the wwweb. To the far right is an icon that vaguely resembles an open book. Click on it.

9. Your screen now contains the files on the server on your left and on your local site on your right. To move files highlight them, drag and drop

10. Be careful to put them in the right place on the file. If the site does not appear to be working properly
a) try hitting refresh, sometimes it takes a minute for the server to realize it has new files
b) look at the file structure on the server (what's in what folder). It must be identical to the structure on your local site to work like your local site does.
c)remember image files must be copied onto the server in order for them to show up on your pages.

Using UltraDEV4 Dreamweaver to save pages on the server: Mac or PC

THIS IS THE OLDER VERSION OF DREAMWEAVER--NOT THE VERSION ON THE WATSON 247 COMPUTERS. IT IS PROVIDED HERE AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT UPDATED.

1. Open Dreamweaver

2. Set up Site by going to the Site menu and choosing 'New site'

3. Highligh 'local info' by clicking on it

4. Fill in the boxes on the right. The name can be whatever you want-- this is only a name for you

The 'local route folder' is the folder where all of the files used in your site are located. You can click on the folder icon to choose the right folder instead of remembering all of the names. Once you have clicked to highlight the folder do not open it-- just highlight it and click on choose.

5. Do not fill in the HTTP address box

6. Click on the 'remote info' on the left side

7. Make the following selections
Server Access FTP
FTP host bio.davidson.edu
Host directory (blank)
Login the classes' username
Password the classes' password

8. Click on 'OK' at the bottom of the dialog box

9. Click on 'Done' at the bottom of the next dialog box

10. When you view the site inspector-- to the right of the site name is the icon of two plugs. Click on that. The 'connection' will be made between your computer and the bio server. Now you can drag and drop your files and folders into the appropriate spot.

11. If you drag a file over any files with the same name are automatically overwritten without warning or beeping. Be sure you are transferring the most recent version of your file and are putting them into your space.

Using CuteFTP to save pages on the server (PC users)
Should be very similar to the directions seen above since Dreamweaver just has CuteFTP imbedded in its software.

Using Fetch to save pages on the server (Mac users)
1. Open Fetch. (You may have to go under the FILE menu and use the FIND function to find it.)

2. A NEW CONNECTION box should appear on the screen. If it does not  go under the FILE menu and choose NEW CONNECTION.

3. Fill in the dialogue box as follows:

Host:   bio.davidson.edu (Note there is a bio in there)
Username:  given in class (NOT your personal username)
Password: given in class
4. A dialog box will appear with the host name at the top and a folder name of '2002'. Double click on the methods folder

5. To move a file from your computer/disc to the server Click on PUT. Highlight the file/image name and click on OPEN.

6. In the dialogue box that appear change the format to "RAW DATA" then click on OK. A dog will run on the screen and put your file onto the server.

7. Close the connection by quitting Fetch.

NOTE: Fetch automatically overrides any files on the server with a 'put' version of the same name. No warnings. No beeps. Make sure you are loading the most current version when you 'put' a file.

8. To move a bunch of files or a folder and all of its contents  go under the REMOTE menu and choose PUT FOLDERS AND FILES. Highlight the files or folder and click ADD. When you have added all of the items  you wish to put on the server click DONE.

9. Change the FORMAT to RAW DATA and click on OK.--the dog will move all of the files at once.
