Dr. Hales's guidelines for recommendation requests
1. Please make your request at least three weeks in advance of the recommendation due date. If it has been a long time since you were in my class, please arrange to meet with me in person so that you can catch me up on things.
Steps 2 and 3 below must be completed within three days of my agreeing to write your letter.
Send me an email containing the following information.
a. Due date and other information on the job, fellowship, or program to which you are applying, including links.
b. Email address or URL for submission of electronic recommendation, if applicable.
c. Essays or personal statements (drafts are fine) that will accompany your application.
d. The names and dates of the course(s) you took with me, your course grade(s), and topics of your
papers/reports/presentations. What aspect(s) of your performance would you like highlighted?
e. A current resume/CV (as an attachment) and any additional information on courses and extracurricular activities.
3. For recommendations to be mailed, supply an addressed and stamped business-sized envelope (4 by 9.5 inches). Include the return address: K. Hales, Dept of Biology, Box 7118, Davidson NC 28035. Exception: for on-campus destinations like the pre-med office, you don't need to provide an envelope, as I will use recycled inter-departmental envelopes.
Supply printouts of any necessary forms. Fill out your portion of any form that requires a signature and/or a choice whether to waive your right to view the recommendation.
