Educational Goals and Learning Outcomes

Cloning Disease Genes

Educational Goals:

  • Understand how to isolate disease-causing alleles and their wild-type counterparts.
  • Learn to manipulate genomic databases.
  • Apply molecular information to explain genetic diseases.

Learning Outcomes - Students will:

  • explain why a particular mutation is dominant or recessive
  • interpret RFLP data to identify DNA fragments containing disease alleles
  • design experiments to determine which step in protein production may be at fault for a particular disease.
  • describe the molecular causes for CF and HD
  • mine genomic databases for detailed information about any given gene/protein
