Educational Goals and Learning Outcomes

Why Poisoned Pot?

Educational Goals:

  • Learn how plants harvest and store energy.
  • Understand how an herbicide works.
  • Integrate biology in larger social and political contexts.

Learning Outcomes - Students will:

  • describe biological energy conversions using chemical terminology
  • explain the major steps in light harvesting
  • summarize the key aspects of carbon fixation
  • make connections between spectrophotometry in lab and plant physiology
  • outline how a pesticide can kill plants
  • synthesize current knowledge to formulate when a biological agent should be regulated
  • hypothesize why a chemical might be harmful to humans based on its mode of action on non-human species
