HIV/AIDS Biology
Educational Goals:
- Study the epidemiology of HIV and AIDS.
- Learn the life cycle of HIV.
- Understand how AIDS develops.
- Integrate molecular methods with biology of HIV/AIDS.
- Appreciate the interface of biology and social norms.
Learning Outcomes - Students will:
- relate biological concepts to diagnosis and treatment
of HIV+/AIDS patients
- explain the major steps in HIV life cycle
- summarize how HIV is diagnosed
- analyze ELISA and Western blot data for diagnosis
- list the risk factors for contracting HIV
- describe how AIDS medication works
- formulate a policy describing appropriate precautions
for HIV prevention
- write a newspaper story describing the social stigma
around AIDS and how this is counter productive for society
