Terminology

Genomics (ge-nome'-icks) is a multidiciplinary field that studies the total DNA content of an organism (its genome).

Genomics investigators are trained in chemistry, physics, math, computer science and biology.

Bioinformatics tools allow people to extract meaning from huge datasets, such as the DNA sequence of a whole genome.

When people make cakes, they often focus on the superficial icing rather than the cake itself.

The fly genome has been sequenced and pig is underway.

We are going to look at the layers inside a cake that constitue more than 95% of the field of genomics
