In the field, the property was surveyed for vegetation species, age, and height, signs of wildlife, and presence of water. Additionally, a GPS unit was used to increase the geographic accuracy of the map of the property. The map at right represents the tree stands established. The stands that are labeled O1-6 represent open fields, and the stands labeled with letters represent wooded tree stands.

Other data were obtained from data sources from the web and the Ashe County mapping service. Parcel information and ortho photos for Ashe county were obtained from the Ashe County mapping service, and elevation data came from GIS Data Depot.
