Eadweard Muybridge Horse Cantering (Bowling 1997)

While also a diagonal gait, the canter has three beats; the final hind leg and the leading foreleg are the first and third beats, while the first hind and second fore are paired for the second beat (Waring 28). The canter also has a pause, after the third beat, when all of the hooves have left the ground (Deuel 1987). The speed of horses in a canter ranges from 10 to 12mph (Waring 28).
