Physiology of Galapagos Marine Iguanas

The Galapagos marine iguana is one of the most unique of all reptiles and provides excellent insight into remarkable physiological functions and behaviors. While morphologically similar to other iguanas, marine iguanas are the only lizards to feed underwater. Marine iguanas have been known to dive up to 15 m below the surface and can stay in the cold Galapagos waters for upwards of an hour. To perform this unique feat, marine iguanas have evolved specific physiological functioning and behavior.
