Camouflage is the result of color or pattern change to blend into the surroundings, which depends upon the visual preception of the viewer. Defined here, color change is the process of changing from one color to another in a small interval of time .  This is an important distinction to make from color patterning or color change over long periods of time.   In other words, some color change is morphological rather than a physiological color change. Some reptiles are able to undergo color change but it is not immediate.  Other reptiles, however, can actively change color using specialized signaling mechanisms in order to change color quickly, depending on the biotic or abiotic cues. (Stuart-Fox and Adnan Moussalli 2008)
The ability to change the color of the skin is an important biological tool for those reptiles that perform it.  Color change is useful in thermoregulation, communication, and avoiding predators.  Therefore, color change is much more than just camouflage to avoid predators!
