How Does the Nervous System Work?

The nervous system is one of the most fascinating systems in the universe. It is the only known system that has the ability to study itself, to know itself.  There is no other organ as awe-inspiring as the brain, and yet how does this collection of cells and chemicals function?  We are just beginning to understand and grasp the intricate innerworkings of the nervous system, and the devestating consequences that result if this system is disrupted.
