| Freeze Avoidance and Freeze Tolerance: An Overview | A study of northern map turtles (Graptemys geographica) examined freeze tolerance in hatchlings overwintering in natal nests prior to emerging in the spring. Hatchlings in nests survived low temperatures of -8 degrees Celsius and half of all dead hatchlings observed were found in nests that exhibited evidence of fall emergence, rather than the delayed emergence of other nests (Nagle et al., 2004). |
