What controls calcification in Corals?

Calcification in coral is controlled by both biotic and abiotic factors (Allemand et al., 2011).  Depending on environmental conditions, it can be represented by a number of chemical formulas, shown below in Figure 2.

As of now it is unknown which form of dissolved inorganic carbon is used to from CaCO3 (Allemand et al. 2011).
