What controls calcification in Corals? Calcification in coral is controlled by both biotic and abiotic factors (Allemand et al., 2011). Depending on environmental conditions, it can be represented by a number of chemical formulas, shown below in Figure 2. Figure 2. Possible chemical reactions involved in the formation of calcium carbonate in coral. As of now it is unknown which form of dissolved inorganic carbon is used to from CaCO3 (Allemand et al. 2011).
