The Illinois State Police Department uses ArcView Spatial Analyst and ArcView Tracking Analyst extensions for criminal justice purposes and to track traffic fatalities (Pratt 2000). Special ArcExplorer projects were created for each of 21 police districts, and data from each district was loaded into the programs and mapped (Pratt 2000). The user can search for traffic data within various spatial boundaries (county, state, etc.) or look for crashes that are alcohol-related or involve some other specific characteristic (Pratt 2000). GIS has helped the State Police identify problem areas and determine where more officers are needed. |
