Ninia sebae

(Culebrilla del Cafe)

Size: Small snake - maximum total length of 386mm.

Habitat: Forest litter in lowland moist and wet forests, premontane wet forest, and lowland dry forest.

Biology: Common secretive nocturnal leaf litter species.

Food: Caecilians, earthworms, slugs, snails.

Note: When frightened, it moves with jerky movements so that the red dorsal color always faces the threat. Will hide head under coils. Will thrash and musk but not bite when handled.

Note: One of multiple species called 'vibaro de sangre' by many Costa Ricans. It is believed that bites from such 'blood snakes' will lead to death due to bleeding through the skin.
