Return of the Big Snapping Turtle
This North Carolina State Record common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) was first captured in a farm pond just east of Davidson during the Fall of 2000 by Ross Cocklin and Wrenn Martin (both '01). He weighed 53 lbs. David Stroupe ('02) and Kristine Grayson ('03) recaptured this big guy on Saturday, Sept. 15 along with his slightly smaller "buddy" who weighs in around 35 lbs. Both turtles were returned to the Herpetology Laboratory in the Department of Biology and seem to doing just fine. After measuring and marking, both will be returned to their pond.

Here, Kristine Grayson uses a stick to keep the "big guy" from biting his smaller buddy.
