(Me and one of "my" turtles in the lab)

Hi! My name is Joy Hester, I am a senior Biology Major here at Davidson College, and I hail from the beautiful city of Loveland, CO. I have been involved in the Davidson College Herpetology Laboratory since the end of my Sophomore year and I am particularly interested in the ecology of box turtles. I hope to continue working with turtles and other reptiles and amphibians next year in Veterinary School.

See the links below to learn about the projects I am working on. Most of these projects are in progress, but the links should give you some idea as to what I am working on. :) Feel free to email me with any questions you may have about these projects, box turtles, or being a bio major at Davidson (or if you would like to use any of the pictures). I will do my best to answer :)

My CV

Projects I am involved in:

Effects of Relocation on the Spatial and Thermal Biology of Box Turtles (Terrapene carolina)

This page contains a brief description of what a translocation project is, an abstract for my research project, and some of my preliminary data.

The Davidson College Box Turtle Mark-Recapture Program: Urban Herpetological Conservation Research Made Possible by Citizen Scientists

This page has an abstract for a paper I have recently written with Dr. Dorcas and Sarah Budischak describing how the community gets involved in the Davidson College Herpetology Laboratory's Box Turtle Mark-Recapture Program.

The Thermal Biology Of Box Turtles (My Animal Physiology Web Page)

This website was an assignment for my animal physiology class. It has lots of information about the thermal biology of Eastern box turtles and Ornate box turtles, as well as a lot of pictures of said turtles.

Temperature Variation in Free-Ranging Box Turtles

This page describes a project I am doing in conjunction with my relocation project where I am analyzing the variation in the shell temperature variation in free-ranging Eastern box turtles.

Learn how to get involved in the Box Turtle Mark-Recapture Program!
