The cotton-top tamarin is native to Northern Colombia. It received its name because of its unique physical characteristics. The cotton-top tamarin has wild, spiky-looking long white hair from its forehead to the back of its neck and extending over its shoulders (Bridgeman, 2002). The back of the cotton-top tamarin is brown and along the arms and legs are white and yellow. The lower body of the tamarin is reddish-orange and the tip is black (Bridgeman, 2002). This unique Callitrichid is the size of a squirrel and weighs less than one pound (Massicot, 2005). The male and female cotton-top tamarins are about the same size. There is a ratio of about one female tamarin to 1.12 males (Kirkwood and Stathatos, 1992).
