NON-PRESCRIPTION RESPONSES TO MENTAL ILLNESS |
Lindsay Veit
Introduction
Mental health is not isolated from outside factors. In addition to your natural brain physiology, substances, activities, and belief systems can all impact your brain in different ways. This section explores those factors, which are not prescribed treatments for mental illness nor natural supplements. While all of the factors discussed are “natural,” they differ from the supplement section in that these are commonly used and often abused aspects of daily life that can impact mental health. This section looks at the effects of the substances caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol and drugs on behavior and mental function. Exercise and religion are two very common activities in American society also have important impacts on mental health.
