Biology 368: Study and Treatment of Human Disease

Mwandi, Zambia

The summer program in Mwandi, Zambia offers students an opportunity to work or various research & service projects at the United Church of Zambia's mission hospital, primary school or preschool. UCZ's mission hospital compound is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Mwandi is a community of about 8,000 located on the northern fringes of the Kalahari Desert along the Zambezi River. It is approximately 150 miles west of Livingstone, Zambia and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Participating students experience the culture of the Mwandi community and Zambian society.

In the spring semester before the trip to Zambia, students enroll in Biology 368 on the Davidson campus. The on-campus component of the course includes an introduction to Zambia, particularly the Lozi people of Mwandi, as well as discussions of health and disease in 3rd world countries. Students will discuss medical, economic and societal issues that face the peoples of Mwandi. Immediately following the spring semester, students will travel to Mwandi to conclude their course work which will consist of an independent project and a medical experience at the UCZ hospital compound. Students will spend approximately 3 weeks on-site in Mwandi and will write a final research paper based on their independent project. Student housing is provided on the mission hospital compound. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to travel to a wildlife refuge in Botswana and to enjoy some of the attractions found in Livingstone, Zambia.
