HHMI Bridge Program for Rising High School Seniors

: Davidson College will offer an intensive summer laboratory “bridge” experience for 16 rising high school seniors from groups under-represented in the sciences. Students from high schools in the Davidson area are eligible to apply for this program and must be recommended by at least one high school science teacher. The two-week program, which will run weekdays from July 16 through July 29, 2008, will prepare students for the challenges of college introductory biology courses by teaching them basic laboratory techniques and scientific methodology. The Bridge Program will encourage participants to pursue their interests in science throughout their undergraduate experience. Each Bridge Program student will receive a stipend to compensate for lost summer income. Click here for more details on the HHMI Bridge Program and application procedures.

HHMI Undergraduate Teaching Fellowships for Davidson College Science Majors

The two-week Bridge Program will be developed by three Davidson College undergraduate HHMI Teaching Fellows under the guidance of Dr. Pat Peroni. During June and early July, the HHMI Teaching Fellows will prepare laboratory protocols for the Bridge Program. In late June, they will use two of their laboratory exercises to provide enrichment opportunities for students from the Freedom Schools program. Once the HHMI Bridge high school students arrive in mid-July, the teaching fellows will assume primary responsibility for teaching the curriculum they designed earlier in the summer. Following their summer teaching experience, the HHMI Teaching Fellows will present a poster summarizing the Bridge Program at the HHMI Poster Symposium.

Each HHMI Teaching Fellow will receive a competitive stipend and a housing allowance for 10 weeks. By participating in the Bridge Program and the Freedom Schools program, the Teaching Fellows will experience a range of valuable pedagogical techniques.
