GCAT Listserv (GCAT-L)

305 subscribers as of 9/07

highly focused content and not too many emails to become annoying

You can subscribe to GCAT 's e-mail discussion list (know as GCAT-L). The purpose of GCAT-L is to connect faculty members who are using or want to use genomic methods in their undergraduate courses. When you subscribe to GCAT-L, you will receive a copy of all email messages sent to GCAT-L by anyone. GCAT-L receives messages and redistributes them to everyone who has subscribed.

How does GCAT-L work?

Messages intended for all subscribers to read and discuss should be sent to GCAT-L@davidson.edu. Anyone who has subscribed to GCAT-L can post an email to all readers.

How do I subscribe to GCAT-L?

To participate in GCAT-L, you must subscribe to it; you have to subscribe yourself. To subscribe yourself, send an email to:

listserv@davidson.edu

Do not have any subject - leave it blank.

The body of the email message should not have any signatures and should look like this:

 SUBSCRIBE gcat-l (your name here)

(your name here) would be what you want this listserv program to call you, e.g. Malcolm Campbell. The listserv software automatically picks up the email address the person is sending from and uses that.

When you successfully subscribe yourself to GCAT-L, you will receive an email asking you to verify your subscription. This step has been added to prevent someone from signing you up without your permision. The verifying email will look like this:

Your command:

SUBSCRIBE GCAT-L (Name)

has been received. You must now reply to this message (as explained below) to complete your subscription. The purpose of this confirmation procedure is to make sure that you have indeed requested to be added to the list.

To confirm the execution of your command, simply point your browser to the following URL:

http://listserv.davidson.edu/cgi-bin/wa.exe?OK=500336DA&L=GCAT-L

Alternatively, if you have no WWW access, you can reply to the present message and type "ok" (without the quotes) as the text of your message. Just the word "ok" - do not retype the command. This procedure will work with any mail program that fully conforms to the Internet standards for electronic mail.

If you receive an error message, try sending a new message to LISTSERV@DAVIDSON.EDU (without using the "reply" function - this is very important) and type "ok 500336DA" as the text of your message.

Finally, your command will be cancelled automatically if LISTSERV does not receive your confirmation within 48 hours. After that time, you must start over and resend the command to get a new confirmation code. If you change your mind and decide that you do NOT want to confirm the command, simply discard the present message and let the request expire on its own.

You should save this welcome message because it has important information about unsubscribing from the list and your list owner may include text at the end of the file that you will need to read.

You will receive the following Welcome message:

GCAT-L is an open forum to share ideas with other teachers who work together to establish a new field in undergraduate biology. The GCAT web site is located at <bio.davidson.edu/GCAT> .

Directions for using GCAT-L can be found at <bio.davidson.edu/Biology/GCAT/GCAT-L.html>.

GCAT, the Genome Consortium for Active Teaching, is comprised of faculty from around the world who teach undergraduates. Created in the fall of 1999, the misson of GCAT is to facilitate the use of genomic methods in the undergraduate curriculum. <bio.davidson.edu/projects/GCAT/gcat.html#require>. To accomplish this mission, GCAT has established five specific goals:

1) Use a centralized DNA chip reader to make genomic methods affordable for every undergraduate biology curriculum. <bio.davidson.edu/projects/GCAT/photo.html>

2) Create a clearinghouse of information for teachers to use for the instruction of genomics.

3) Create readily available and centralized databases of raw data and analyzed results for pedagogical uses. <bio.davidson.edu/projects/GCAT/Results.html>

4) Develop a global network of teachers using genomics in the undergraduate curriculum. <bio.davidson.edu/projects/GCAT/members/main.html>

5) Assess the impact of GCAT on student learning

Your thoughts and questions are of interest to all of us, so please feel free to use GCAT-L any time. Send your messages to everyone on the list by using this address: <GCAT-L@davidson.edu>. Specific questions can be sent to A. Malcolm Campbell at <macampbell@davidson.edu>.

As stated earlier, save the welcome message because it contains important information about GCAT-L, including information about how to report problems and how to unsubscribe from GCAT-L.

How do I send mail to GCAT-L?
