Mountain Dusky Salamander

(Desmognathus ochrophaeus)

Description: 2-4 in. (7-10 cm).  Coloration and patterns are very variable in this species.  This salamander has a round tail and a light line from the eye to the angle of the jaw.  Some individuals have a light stripe down back that may vary in color from yellow to brown or individuals may have an irregular dorsal stripe.
Habitats: Mostly terrestrial and can be found far out into the woods after heavy rains.  Seek refuge under stones, logs, and leaves near brooks and streams.
Habits: The mountain dusky salamander often congregates in large numbers during the winter near springs.  This species is nocturnal and can be found climbing trees and shrubs while foraging.
