Pigmy Salamander

(Desmognathus wrighti)

Description: 1-2 in. (3-5 cm). This salamander is very tiny and bronze in color.  The tail is rounded and there is a light stripe down the back varying from reddish brown to tan.
Habitats: found in spruce-fir forests under moss and bark in the mountains of North Carolina.  Sometimes when nocturnal these salamanders can be found up tree trunks, especially in wet weather.
Young: There is no larval stage in this salamander.  The young metamorphose inside of the egg.
