Southern Two-Lined Salamander
(Eurycea cirrigera)


Larvae

Description:  2.5-4 in. (6.5-9.5 cm). Coloration of body is yellow to orange-red with an orange colored band on back. Two black stripes run down the sides of the body.  The belly is also yellow to reddish orange.  There are five toes on each hind foot.  The tail is up to 55% of the total length of the body.
Habitat:  This species is found all throughout North Carolina.  This salamander inhabits areas near springs, seepages, and streams in hardwood forests and swamps.  They are most numerous in the mountains.
Habits: Courtship occurs in the fall and eggs are laid in the winter in running water.
