Longtail Salamander

(Eurycea longicauda)

Description:  4-6.5 in. (10-15.9 cm). Coloration of body is yellowish with vertical black markings on the tail.  The ground color can vary from yellow to orange-red to red. The belly is usually unmarked.
Habitat:  Usually found under rocks, seepages, and streamside around areas of limestone and shale.
Young: Females lay about 90 eggs underground or in caves.  The larvae hatch over winter and reach sexual maturity by the next summer.
