Red-Spotted Newt

(Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens)

Description:  2-4.5 in. (5.5-12 cm).  Coloration of adults is olive-green to dark greenish brown.  Coloration of this salamander in the eft stage is bright orange red.
Habitat: Adults live in ponds, lakes, and pools along streams.  Efts live in moist forest areas.  This species is very abundant throughout North Carolina.
Habits:  Newts feed on insects, crustaceans, and mollusks.  Adults feed on eggs and frogs.  Courtship occurs in spring and fall.  Females lay eggs singly on plants and leaves.  The eft stage is occurs after the larvae transforms in the summer or fall.
