Redback Salamander
(Plethodon cinereus)

Description: 2-4in. (5-10 cm). There are two distinct morphs.  One is called redback, which has a reddish stripe down the back to end of tail.  The body is usually dark gray to black.  The other morph is called a leadback, which is dark gray to black without the stripe down its back.
Habitat: The terrestrial salamander is typically found in wooded or forested areas throughout North Carolina.
Habits: Hides beneath logs, barks, and stones.  Feed on insects and will climb plants in search of food.  Mating period is from October to April.
Young: Female deposits a clutch of 8 to 10 eggs within a cavity.
