Weller's Salamander
(Plethodon welleri)

Description: 2-4 in. (6.5-8.0 cm). Coloration of body is black with dull golden or silvery blotches on the back.  The belly is usually plain black.
Habitat: Found in spruce-fir forests under rocks, leaf litter, and rotten logs in the mountains of North Carolina.
Habits: This salamander feeds on spiders, mites and insects.  Courtship and mating occur in the spring and fall.
Young: Females lay clutches from 4 to 11.  Eggs are laid in early midsummer and hatch in late August or early fall.
