Description: 4.5-7 in. (11.5-18 cm). Coloration is very distinct with
a large, broad reddish stripe down back. Head is plain black or dark gray.
Belly has light spots.
Habitat: Found in the forest litter, under rock outcroppings and logs
in the mountains of North Carolina. Usually inhabit hillsides and ravines covered
with mosses and ferns.
Habits: Diet consists of arthropods and mollusks.
Young: Juveniles have red spots on the back in pairs with a light belly.
