Northern Red Salamander
(Pseudotriton ruber)

 

Larvae

Description: 4-6 in. (10-15.5 cm).  Coloration of body is red to reddish-orange with black dots on the back.  The iris of the eye is yellow.  The belly is a paler red with black spots than back.
Habitat: Usually found in the piedmont and mountains of North Carolina.  These salamanders hide under moss, stones, or logs near springs and brooks.
Habits: These salamanders feed on earthworms, insects, and other small salamanders.  Courtship occurs in summer with spawning taking place in October.
Young: Females lay a clutch containing about 70 eggs.  Hatching occurs in early December and the larval period last over two years.
