Lesser Siren
(Siren intermedia)

Description: 7-12 in. (18-69 cm). Coloration is that of the greater siren, olive to slate colored.  Also have external gills and two legs with four toes. Can be covered with brown spots.
Habitats: Found during the day in ditches, ponds, and other shallow water areas.
Habits: The Lesser Siren will aestivate when the environment becomes dry.  This means the salamander is able to with stand extreme dry periods.  Their name comes from their high shrill alarm sound when attacked by predators.
