Greater Siren
(Siren lacertina)

Description: 20-30 in. (51-76 cm). Coloration is usually olive or slate colored, some have black spots on top of  head.  Has two front legs with four toes on each and external gills.
Habitat: Usually found in shallow water such as in ditches, muddy ponds, streams and turbid lakes.
Habits: Mainly are nocturnal and feed on crayfish, worms, mollusks, fish and aquatic vegetation.
Young: Juveniles look very similar to dwarf sirens and have a light stripe on the side of body; they become darker as they grow.
Siren Spotting Techniques: Use a flashlight at night to look for these salamanders while they are foraging.
