Many-Lined Salamander
(Stereochilus marginatus)

Description: 2.5-4 in. (6-9.5 cm). Coloration of body is brown with a series of indistinct dark longitudinal lines on the sides. Belly is yellow colored with dark spots.  The head and tail are short and small.
Habitat: Found in sluggish streams and pools around swampy woodlands through out the piedmont and coast of North Carolina.  Also are common in shallow cypress or gum ponds in pine savannas.
Habits: These salamanders are very aquatic but can be found under leaf litter and logs in dry weather.
Young: Females lay about 60 eggs and care for them until they hatch in the early spring.  The aquatic larval form last for up to two years before metamorphosis occurs.
