Size: Between 31 and 45 inches (79-114 cm) long and weighing approximately
170 to 350 pounds (77-159 kg).
Description: Loggerheads are primarily reddish-brown in coloration
and have large heads with powerful jaws. They also often have barnicles
and other organisms attatched to their shell. Males differ from females in having
narrower shells and longer/thicker tails. Young Loggerheads have a more
brownish colored carpace and a tan plastron.
Habitat: Prefers salt water environments, but can survive for extended
periods of time in fresh bodies of water
Range: Found all along the east coast of the United States.
During the warmer months of the year they tend to range closer to the shore.
Behavior: Nest regularly along the coast of the southeastern U.S.,
ranging as far north as Maryland and New Jersey. Nesting period extends
from the middle of May until late August.
Status:
Listed as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and protected
under U.S. law. Their greatest threats include human development of the
Atlantic coastline and getting caught in fishing nets.
