Euptoieta claudia

Common name: Variegated Fritillary

Appearance:

  • Upperside is orange with distinct, thick veins and black spots near the margin
  • Hindwing is slightly scalloped
  • Underside is a mottled pattern of rough stripes of light orange and brown with no spots
  • 2-3 inch wingspan

Found: In open sunny areas, fields, road edges, pastures

Major foodplant: Violets and passion-vines

Adults are active in: May - October
