The interns,
their parents, the HHMI summer research fellows and the faculty mentors
met for the first time in late April. At this time, the interns were asked
to list, in order of preference, the projects they would most like to
work on for the summer. Interestingly, each intern chose a different project
so the process of assigning them to their top choice was very easy.
Two of the
1998 LOL interns enrolled in college the following fall:
- Kevin
Green completed his freshman year at Winston-Salem State University
and he's majoring in Biology.
- Robert
Dickerson completed his freshman year at North Carolina State University
and his major is undeclared.
Four of the
1998 LOL interns graduated from high school in May 1999 and planned to
attend college in the fall:
- Alex Thornton
will attend Florida A&M University.
- Amanda
Talford and Amelia Talford will be attending Winston-Salem State University.
- Ela Burton
will be attending Hampshire College.
Love of
Learning Teaching
In addition
to the internship program, 5 Love of Learning teachers received a stipend
for teaching during the month-long Love of Learning residential program
in July 1998.

The interns,
their parents and the HHMI summer research fellows met for the first time
in early June 1997 to establish a work schedule for the summer. Each LOL
intern spent the equivalent of 10 hours/week for 10 weeks working with
the fellow. The interns were also included as participants in the six
luncheons scheduled throughout the summer research program, as well as
the final HHMI poster presentation held on September 24, 1997.
Three of
the LOL interns (Janet Beamer, Dawn Houseton and Antwaine Mitchell) completed
their senior year in high school in 1997-98. Janet Beamer was accepted
to 5 colleges for 1998-99. Two of the LOL interns (Dawn Douglas and Isiah
Williams) attended their first year at Winston Salem State University
in 1997-98.
