DAVIDSON COLLEGE SFS
INFORMATION
Davidson College is an affiliate
school of the School for Field Studies. This relationship with
SFS allows Davidson students to:
-
Have priority acceptance
to the various SFS semester and summer programs.
-
Receive 4 Davidson
biology course credits (Biology 381-384) as pass/fail for
attending a semester program and 1 Davidson biology course
credit (Biology 385) as pass/fail for attending a summer
program. Three of the SFS semester courses (Biology 381-383)
and the SFS summer course (Biology 385) may count toward
a major in Biology. SFS courses do not fulfill the Davidson
core requirement for laboratory science. Note that seven
of the courses required for the Biology major must be Davidson
courses taught by Davidson College faculty. SFS courses
do not count towards those seven courses.
-
Fulfill the cultural
diversity core requirement (Biology 384), if the student
attends semester (not summer) programs in Kenya, Turks and
Caicos, Baja California, or Costa Rica.
Application process:
1. This program is open to all Davidson
students regardless of major. SFS requires that students have
successfully completed one college-level biology course and
at least one full semester of college before they accept a student
into the semester programs. Some SFS centers have additional
requirements.
2. Students apply directly
to SFS for acceptance. SFS has a rolling admission policy. The
admission committee meets every two weeks to-make decisions
on applicants. Students applying for semester programs during
the following academic year should get their applications to
SFS early in the new year, or even before Christmas, for Fall
Semester programs. A general guideline would be to apply as
early as possible after making a decision to attend a specific
program.
3. Although SFS does not
have specific deadlines, Davidson College does have a deadline
of March 15 for fall study abroad applications and a deadline
of November 15 for spring study abroad applications. There are
no Davidson College deadlines for summer applications. Applications
for fall study abroad after March 15 will be fined $250 and
after June 15, $500. Applications for spring study abroad after
November 15 will be fined $250 and after January 1, $500.
Fees for semester programs:
Students attending any SFS semester will
be charged regular SFS tuition and fees for the semester plus
a $350 study abroad fee. These fees are paid directly to Davidson
College. The College sends SFS a check for each student's registration
fee, deposit and tuition. Financial aid is applicable to the
SFS program, as it would be in a normal Davidson semester.
Fees for summer programs:
Registration fee, deposit and tuition
are all paid directly to SFS by the student.
Registration for courses:
1. Semester program: Once accepted by
SFS, students must complete the "Off-Campus Study Terms
and Conditions" form and the "Approval for Off-Campus
Davidson Programs" form. These forms must be returned to
Dr. Dorcas. You will need to take a copy of your Approval (
or acceptance) letter from SFS, with you to the Residence Life,
before they will sign the "Approval for Off-Campus Davidson
Programs" form.
Students attending SFS in the Fall Semester should also leave
their course preferences for the following Spring Semester with
their advisor and tell the registrar to send their registration
materials their advisor at the appropriate time. Students attending
SFS in the Spring Semester will have plenty of time to fill
out the course preference form for the following Fall Semester
when they return from the SFS program.
2. Summer program: Once
accepted by SFS, student should see Dr. Dorcas and complete
an Off Campus Study Agreement form. To obtain Davidson course
credit for the summer program, students must complete a contract
course form (before leaving) and have it signed by Dr. Dorcas.
STUDENTS MUST ENROLL IN
SFS COURSES AT DAVIDSON IN ORDER TO OBTAIN DAVIDSON COURSE CREDIT.
ENROLLMENT IN THE PROGRAM THOUGH BOSTON UNIVERSITY IS NOT AN
OPTION FOR DAVIDSON STUDENTS.
Attention Premedical
Students Applying To Medical School
When entering your School for Field Studies
courses on the American Medical College Application Service
(AMCAS) document, be certain that you list the courses as Davidson
courses with a grade of pass/fail. The Davidson transcript is
the only official document that provides a record of your work
in this program.
