The
summer of 1997 was the first year for Davidson's HHMI summer research
program under the 1996 grant and it was very successful. Summer
research fellows began their work in mid-May, 1997 and most completed
their projects by the end of July or early August, 1997. Love of
Learning interns assisted the fellows with their research primarily
during the months of June and July. In September, a poster session
and campus reception was held to showcase the research of the summer
research fellows, the LOL interns and their faculty mentors. All
HHMI Summer Research Fellows presented the results of their research
at NCUR in April, 1998. A number of the students continued work
on their research during the 1997-98 academic year, and three of
the Hughes Summer Research Fellows completed honors theses based,
in part, on their summer research. Most of the HHMI summer research
will be submitted for publication in peer reviewed journals in the
near future.
